1.
Elephant's foot. No, not a real elephant’s foot. We’re talking about a radioactive lava flow beneath the Chernobyl reactor. It is shaped like an elephant’s foot and just looking at it can kill you due to the radiation. In fact, most images we have of it were taken by robots. -
2.
Hogweed. Just touching this plant can give you third degree burns. -
3.
Australia. The drop bears are particularly vicious (google it). -
4.
Locked-in Syndrome. Imagine being trapped in your body, fully conscious, but unable to move. A truly frightening medical condition typically caused by stroke, patients are fully aware of their surroundings but are unable to respond in any way outside of limited eye-movement. -
5.
Alzheimer's Disease. Watching people suffer with this disease is quite possibly the only thing worse than actually having it. -
6.
Nuclear warheads. They have gotten so much bigger since Hiroshima and Nagasaki. As if that’s not bad enough, it’s estimated that nine countries possess up to 15,000 nuclear weapons combined. Yikes! -
7.
Rabies. Except for a few people (all since 2004), nobody in history has ever survived rabies without a vaccine. Nobody. Note: in 2004, something called the Milwaukee Protocol was developed. The patients who survived were all treated with this method, but there is still controversy over its effectiveness. -
8.
Organ harvesting. The most incredibly horrifying part is that some parents sell their kids just to make money off their organs. -
9.
Parasites. Not only will you become their dinner, you will become their cozy home. Usually you can get them through contaminated water, under-cooked or spoiled meat, and through transmitting agents such as mosquitoes. -
10.
Condition 1 weather in Antarctica. Condition 1 weather refers to the worst. You’re not even allowed to go outside. Visibility is almost 0, and you would freeze within minutes. To paint a picture, the inside walls of Antarctic research stations sometimes freeze. -
11.
Asteroids. If you knew how many near misses Earth has had, this would probably scare you more that it does. -
12.
Dimethylmercury. This neurotoxin is no longer used in scientific studies because of how dangerous it is. It’s so toxic that a dose as low as .1 mL can kill you. Furthermore, it passes straight through latex, neoprene, PVC, and skin. -
13.
Supervolcanoes. Yellowstone is actually a volcano big enough to destroy almost everything on Earth. -
14.
The deep sea. There are some crazy looking creatures down there: angler fish, goblin sharks, giant isopods… -
15.
Ice Crevasses. One minute you’re there, the next minute you’re gone forever. Oftentimes, crevasses are completely covered in snow, kind of like a snow sinkhole. -
16.
Power. According to recent research, giving someone even a little bit of power decreases their ability to empathize. More power, less empathy. -
17.
Giant Squids. They have eyes the size of basketballs, and reach lengths of up to 43 feet, which is slightly larger than a city bus. -
18.
The suicide plant. Known as Dendrocnide moroides, just brushing against this Australian tree causes so much pain that people have been said to kill themselves. And not just people – horses and other animals have allegedly run themselves off of cliffs following stings. -
19.
Amoebas that eat your brain. These brain-eating amoebas are called Naegleria fowleri, and they live in warm freshwater. Be careful. -
20.
Vampire fish. Never urinate into the Amazon. If you do, vampire fish (candiru) might end up swimming into your bladder. -
21.
Time. When you need more, you can’t get it. When you want less, you can’t get rid of it. You are at its mercy. -
22.
Fatal Familial Insomnia. People with this disease lose the ability to sleep. There is no cure, and most patients die within 18 months. -
23.
Delta P. This is the pressure differential between two bodies of water (drains at the bottom of water towers, etc). These can be extremely dangerous to divers as they can suddenly suck them up against the drain if a leak occurs. Oftentimes, the diver will drown. -
24.
Resistance to antibiotics. If your doctor tells you to finish the antibiotics…finish them. Even if you already feel better. If you don’t, the remaining bacteria will develop immunity. Many already have. -
25.
Aneurysms. Even the healthiest 20 year old can die in seconds due to an aneurysm. Be glad you woke up today.
